The Partly True Story of how a Jester's Life BeginsOnce upon a time, a jolly fat lady was sleeping in her wee feather bed when a long dead jester came to her in a dream and told her that there weren't near enough jesters in the kingdom. He told her she should be the one to create more and that she should go to the wizard to learn how. The wizard went upside her head with his magic wand for the design and tapped her right had 3 times for the talent.
When the ball is carved for the head of the jester, it is painted a lovely shade of ivory, but the wood still doesn't know for sure if it wants to be a jester, so with that first coat of paint, it raises it's fibers in protest. Those fibers must be sanded off to make the ball smooth enough for a jesters head. Once the fibers have lifted and been sanded off, they will never lift again and the painting of the jesters head can begin. Now the jolly fat lady of JESTER'S COURT gives the ball many coats of paint in that lovely ivory color. She holds up the painted ball and turns it and turns it until she sees a face in it. Whe she sees the face, she begins to sketch it with a silver pencil because silver has a bit of magic in it. The she paints it with just the right colors to go with the clothes the jester will wear. Sometimes she has to mix and mix to get the colors just right.
When the face is painted, she gives it a music box for a body, and dresses the jester in the finest of clothes that she has made special for that jester. And when it is dressed, she decorates it with pompoms, bells, jewels or whatever will help to make that jester special. Every jester gets a feather in his hat to tickle his new owners with. When the jester is finished and looks just right and special, it is given a name that no other jester has. Each name is used only once and there are never two jesters exactly alike. A card is attached to the left sleeve to let his new owner know the jester's name and what song he or she sings. The jesters are made in a very special way so that they can be posed in most any position. They haven't learned to stand on their heads yet but they are working on it and you never know when they may surprise you. It is the duty of every jester to bring smiles and happiness to all the people. |
